Data quality is critical. If a hotel chain provides verified "kg CO₂e per occupied room-night" values, those should be used instead of national averages. Otherwise, DEFRA’s country-specific hotel factors provide a reliable alternative.
Transfer, Vehicle, and Rail Emissions
Ground transportation emissions vary depending on vehicle type and fuel:
- Transfers and vehicles: Total distance × vehicle emission factor. If reporting per traveler, divide the result by the number of passengers. For example, 100 km × 0.25 kg CO₂e/km = 25 kg CO₂e, or 5 kg CO₂e per passenger for five travelers.
- Rail and public transport: Distance × number of passengers × transport-specific emission factor. DEFRA provides separate values for high-speed rail, metro, and buses.
Two vehicles covering the same distance do not necessarily produce the same emissions, making transport-mode classification essential in business travel reporting.
